In the Same Space ( current solo show)
SOLO SHOW
NATIONAL CONTEMPORARY MUSEUM OF ART, ATHENS
JUNE 17TH - OCTOBER 30TH, 2022
EXTENDED TO NOVEMBER 20th
In the Same Space, is a dialogue between my photography and my grandfather’s paintings of Athens and the island of Aegina. My grandfather, Andreas Vourloumis, a Greek painter (1910-1999) mainly studied daily life in Athens in watercolor, which was his favourite medium. When he passed away in 1999, my family found hundreds of sketchbooks in drawers in his home. My pappou was part of the dynamic 1930’s generation of Greek artists. A chemist by training, he devoted himself to art, abandoning his scientific career. He was self-taught and his art was driven by everyday life in the city. This project is titled after the poem of Constantine P. Cavafy. I dedicate this poem to my pappou and his creative process and the connection I feel to him as I photograph Greece, through his own artistic vision. He never knew I became a photographer or how his work influenced my own.
In the Same Space by Constantine Cavafy
The setting of houses, cafés, the neighborhood
that I’ve seen and walked through years on end:
I created you while I was happy, while I was sad,
with so many incidents, so many details.
And, for me, the whole of you has been transformed into feeling.
