Selected Assignments: The Decline of Perama Shipping Yards- The Financial Times

Perama repair docks known locally as "the zone" is one of the first victims of the ongoing economic crisis in Greece.

Perama was the most active repair zone for international shipping companies once called the Wall Street of Greece’s ship repair industry. Most repair companies have now left the area due to the decline of the number of ships coming in for repair due to continuous striking and union monopolizing. Shipping companies are sending their boats to repair yards in Asia, Romania, Italy and former Yugoslavia were repair costs are also substantially lower. Over recent years hundreds of

steel workers and mechanics have lost their jobs. Since the start of the economic crisis Perama has suffered further losses and is in danger of closing entirely leaving hundreds of workers jobless.
